I just read a cute little article about how the library is a socialist enterprise that threatens to quash capitalist free markets. I just love this kind of satire. But in all seriousness, I love that we have an institution that is so socialist. Since when is putting monies into coffers for the benefit of all a bad thing? Yes, indeed it can go wrong, but so can anything humans lay their greedy little hands on. Just because something can go wrong doesn't mean it will; just because someone can be greedy doesn't mean they are. To me, the public library represents the fact that, yes, indeed, it can work, it does work, and if we let it, it will work for us.
